Climate-resilient Agriculture- Practice, Policy, and Prospects An International Review Workshop on Climate-resilience of the Primary Sector in the South Asian Context

 

An international review workshop titled ‘Climate-resilience of the Primary Sector in the South Asian Context’ was successfully held on September 8 th and 9th, 2025, in Chennai. Supported by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and IndusInd Bank and organized by SAFE in association with IIT Madras and PFRI, the workshop addressed The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including respected government representatives, eminent academics, and experienced practitioners, researchers, and policymakers.

 

Participants emphasized that farmers often lack trust in new technologies, and building credibility through clear benefits and accountability is essential

The workshop highlighted that current insurance and subsidy schemes are failing farmers, with premiums unaffordable and payouts uneven across states

Experts noted that fragmented landholdings remain a structural barrier to adopting climate-smart agriculture, increasing costs and complicating technology transfer

Policy-practice gaps were identified in areas such as carbon credit markets and biodiversity credit schemes, where farmers risk being excluded from fair benefits

Collective discussions called for valuing ecosystem services and ensuring that a share of those benefits flows directly to farmers as incentives
